Brits continue to buy green despite credit crunch

Shoppers are not being deterred from buying environmentally-friendly products, despite rising food prices and tightening household budgets, according to Virgin Money.

The financial services company, which provides credit cards among other things, found that eight out of ten shoppers have made either no change or even increased the amount they spend on green products since the credit crunch took hold.

It was also revealed that the under-25s and the over-65s are most committed to maintaining their environmentally-friendly ways.

Just 13 per cent of over-65s and 16 per cent of under-25s said that the current economic uncertainty had forced them to scale back their green habits.

Scott Mowbray from Virgin Money said: "It's not uncommon to see expensive goods decline during a time of economic downturn but the research shows that concern for the environment is not a passing fad."

Despite, the over-65s apparent dedication to environmentally-friendly shopping, Skipton Building Society has found that pensioners are among those worst affected by the credit crunch.
