Cardiff 'is top card fraud hotspot'

Cardiff is the worst city in the UK for credit card fraud, according to a new study.

Research carried out by card protection provider CPP found that the Welsh city has jumped from fifth place in 2007 to first, replacing London in the top spot.

The organisation's annual Card Fraud Index shows that 37 per cent of Cardiff residents have been affected by the crime at least once, compared to 35 per cent in London.

Norwich was third in the ranking, with 30 per cent of its population suffering card fraud, followed by Southampton (28 per cent), Leeds (27 per cent) and Newcastle (25 per cent).

Sarah Blaney, card fraud expert at CPP, commented: "Our research shows that card fraud continues to affect more victims as fraudsters resort to increasingly sophisticated methods."

Ms Blaney explained that card ID theft, where fraudsters attempt to take control of the victim's bank account, accounted for around half of the cases investigated.

Peter Harrison, credit cards expert at moneysupermarket.com, recently recommended that people should examine how they can reduce their credit card debt as quickly as possible.
