Cash machines announced for more low-income areas

More free-access cash machines are to be provided in low-income areas, it was announced by HM Treasury this week.
A total of 143 locations have been identified as suitable places to provide the machines, which can help those on low earnings to avoid paying debit or credit card withdrawal charges every time they use an ATM.
Economic secretary to the Treasury Kitty Ussher and Treasury select committee chairman John McFall said 419 free-access cash machines are now working in low-income areas and the additions will be in place by the end of the year.
According to Ms Ussher, the progress means less people will be financially excluded - especially those who least afford charges levied by some cash machines.
"I am also pleased that the ATM industry had made real steps to improve its signs on cash machines so that it is absolutely clear at a glance whether the machine is free or charging," she added.
Meanwhile, today saw M&S Money receive an award for its credit card provision.
The lender was given the title at the Your Money Direct Awards.
