Financial management 'should be new year's resolution'

People could find that changing deals on financial products allows them to save money throughout 2010, it has been claimed.

Moneysupermarket.com reminded people that it is always a good idea for them to review their finances and suggested that the new year is an opportune time to do this.

The website said that one good way to save money is to take advantage of zero per cent introductory offers on credit cards, while avoiding personal loans which tend to have a higher interest rate.

In addition, it advised people not to over-estimate the level of cover they need through home and car insurance, while paying annually for a policy can reduce the cost of their premium.

Clare Francis, site editor with the group, commented: "A new year's resolution to look for more competitive deals and products could save a household over £4,000 by this time next year."

Last week, Which? said changing credit cards, minimising car and home insurance premiums and opening a savings account with a more competitive interest rate are good ways to save money.
