Online shoppers 'should opt for credit cards'

Shoppers who like to buy goods online are being advised to ditch their debit cards in favour of credit cards.

Tony Northcott from the Trading Standards Institute said credit cards offer more protection if a consumer falls foul of an online scam.

He claimed credit card companies may pay out if a person is a victim of fraud.

However, he warned debit card users would not be offered the same protection.

"If you pay by debit card you won't get your money back, but if you pay by credit card you'll probably be able to claim it back from your credit card company," he said.

Mr Northcott added the fundamental thing to remember was not to buy tickets from touts or unofficial sources.

A number of people recently found the Olympic Games tickets they bought from beijingtickets.com were fake and some music lovers who were planning to attend the V and Reading Festivals shelled out for tickets that never turned up.
