Simple steps protect against card fraud

Credit card users should follow some simple steps to reduce the chances of them becoming the victim of fraud, it has been suggested.

Financial protection provider CPP recommended that people only carry the cards they need in their wallet or purse, in order to minimise the risk of them being lost or stolen.

Cards should never be carried loose in a bag or pocket, the company added, while customers should never allow shop assistants to take them out of sight in case they are copied or cloned.

In addition, PINs should never be written down and people should not let others draw out cash on their behalf. The organisation also recommended that people always check their credit card statements against their receipts so they can spot any unauthorised transactions.

Sarah Blaney, card fraud expert at CPP, commented: "These are simple steps that are very effective in the fight against fraud. If something unusual does appear on your statement make sure you contact your bank or card protection company straight away."

Chris Tapp, director of national money education charity Credit Action, recently said that people still appear to be using more credit than they can afford to repay.
