3 million suffered home damage last winter

The big freeze of late 2010 and early 2011 saw damage caused to up to three million houses in the UK by extreme winter weather.

Around six per cent of all home insurance customers were affected by the weather, reports Churchill Home Insurance.

The worst affected areas in the country were Yorkshire and Humberside and the North East which both saw more than double the average number of damaged homes.

Churchill saw an increase of 45 per cent in the number of claims made for water damage over the previous year, with burst pipes causing flooding in many homes.

The most prominent problem however was roof damage, with 35 per cent of all claims relating to it.

Martin Scott, head of Churchill Home Insurance, said: "It's essential to plan ahead to avoid potential problems."

Consumer Focus recently called for home insurers to help people with debts, who may cut back on energy in the home and risk winter damage.
