Accident-prone Brits 'emphasise the importance of home...

Approximately 25 million Brits have accidentally damaged their home or its contents in some way in the last five years, highlighting the importance of home insurance, according to research from Tescocompare.

The survey revealed that people living in London are most likely to have had an accident in the home.

In the capital, six out of ten have dropped or spilt something, broken their television or broken a window.

Damaging carpets, curtains and furniture through spillages in the most common type of accident, with 34 per cent admitting this has happened to them.

Second most common is dropping a household ornament, with 23 per cent saying they had done this.

The research reveals that the biggest cause of accidents in the home is horseplay, which results in one in four accidents, while two million Brits state that having one drink too many has led to them damaging something.

Paul Baxter from Tescocompare said: "As the saying goes, accidents do happen and this research suggests many of us suffer financial losses on an annual basis."

Meanwhile, Sainsbury's has urged homeowners planning to make structural changes to their properties to contact their insurer first.
