Home insurance customers have been warned to ensure their property is secure before travelling away for the August Bank Holiday.

A new report by M&S home insurance showed that, of the 69 per cent of Brits who will have spent at least one night away from home in August, 51 per cent will be leaving the house empty, with no friend or neighbour to keep an eye on the property in their absence.

Andrew Ferguson, head of general insurance at M&S, pointed out that home insurance is a necessity for those heading away in August, seeing as it is the most popular month for travelling.

He added: "It is important that security measures you take are in line with the terms and conditions of your policy to ensure you have adequate cover should the worst happen."

Recently, figures published by price comparison website moneysupermarket.com found that Chorlton Cum Hardy in Manchester is the postcode district which lodged the most claims for theft in the UK last year.
