Home insurance customers should ensure that their policy includes cover for home emergencies, or if it does not, they should add one to their policy to avoid the cost of call outs.

New findings from the AA have shown that the cost of calling out a tradesman in an emergency can be very high, with roofers charging the most, an average of £96 per call out.

Electricians are also amongst the most expensive to call out, with the charge sitting just below £76. People in London requiring an electrician on the weekend can expect to pay £140 in call out fees alone.

Tom Stringer, head of AA home emergency response, said: "Many people mistakenly think their standard home insurance policies cover them for emergencies, so we would advise that they check the small print and if they are not covered, consider a stand-alone home emergency policy."

In October, the Association of British Insurers said that home damage had cost insurers £730 million in 2010.
