Boiler scheme 'should cover more homes'

The boiler scheme needs to be expanded so more home insurance holders can benefit from it, an expert has suggested.

Earlier this week, the government announced that 43.8 per cent of vouchers issued through the boiler scrappage scheme have been taken up since its launch in January, leaving around 70,000 available.

Commenting on the uptake, Gordon Miller, founder of sustainable development resource whatgreenhome.com, said it shows there is a demand for environment-friendly innovations.

"It is a great scheme but there are only 125,000 households that can qualify for it. Why isn't the government rolling this out to include boilers that aren't just G-rated?" he added.

Mr Miller also pointed out that extending the scheme to cover boilers rated B, C, D, E, and F will cost the government a great deal more, but would have the benefit of causing a large reduction in the UK's CO2 emissions.

In addition, the expert noted the Conservatives have proposed a £6,500 grant for mortgage holders looking to 'green' their homes, but said further details of the scheme are yet to emerge.
