As clumsy Brits try to save money by cooking at home, they are costing themselves more money through accidental damage to their properties, it has been revealed.

The group also found the most common damage caused in the home is china or glass breakages, which were suffered by 51.8 per cent of people, followed by food stains (43 per cent) and red wine spills (33.6 per cent).
Director of the group Simon Douglas commented that he is concerned an estimated third of homes have no contents cover and some families are considering letting their insurance cover lapse to save money in the current economic climate.
He added: "As the amount of entertaining being done in the home is clearly increasing, now is a good time to check that you have an accidental damage extension on your home policy as the number of insurable mishaps is clearly increasing."
Last week, insurer Direct Line stated that newlyweds should ensure they take out contents insurance to cover their wedding gifts.
