Check what is covered with a policy, expert says

It is important not to simply opt for the cheapest policy when searching for home insurance, an expert has warned.

A spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers, Kelly Ostler-Coyle, said that with some of the cheapest policies individuals may not have adequate cover in legal disputes.

It is therefore important to look at what is covered in a home insurance policy rather than just its cost, she said.

"Always shop around and base your decision on what product you're taking out and what cover it provides for you, and not necessarily the price of it," Ms Ostler-Coyle said.

She added that it is important to properly check a policy to ensure what is covered, so that if anything does happen individuals know what they can claim for.

A recent survey from Allianz Insurance has revealed that more than 1.1 million households have argued with neighbours over levels of noise. As a result, the firm is encouraging people to consider legal cover as part of their home insurance policy.
