Chorlton Cum Hardy 'is theft claim hotspot'

People living in Chorlton Cum Hardy in Manchester are the UK residents most likely to make a theft claim on their home insurance, research has shown.

New figures published by price comparison website moneysupermarket.com found that the M21 area is the postcode district which lodged the most claims for theft.

This was followed by Blackheath (SE3), Hammersmith (W6) and Finsbury Park (N4), all in London, while Roundhay in Leeds (LS8) took fifth place for theft claims.

Julie Owens, head of home insurance at moneysupermarket.com, commented: "Home is where the heart is and there's no denying that having it burgled is an emotional and frightening experience. Major cities, like London and Manchester, and affluent areas are a target for criminals."

The research also showed that ten of the top 20 postcode districts for theft home insurance claims were in London.

Last week, the Association of British Insurers warned homeowners that the risk of theft tends to increase as the weather warms up, as people are more likely to leave their doors and windows open or be away on holiday.
