Country 'is more dangerous than city'

People living in the country feel that their individual safety and that of their property is at risk, it has been claimed.

Research carried out by financial services provider Halifax found 48 per cent of Brits feel unsafe when walking along a deserted country lane, while 47 per cent of those living in urban areas believe walking through city streets at night is safer than strolling in the country.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, commented that people need to be aware of the steps they can take to protect themselves in and about their home.

He added: "Our research discovered that times are changing. It appears that young urbanites feel safer among the hustle and bustle of city streets than walking through a deserted country lane at night."

Last week, Robert Pritchard, director at property consultancy Smiths Gore, stated that an increase in the number of mortgage products could see the return of 'a sellers' market' for prime country properties.
