Parents should check the details of their home insurance policy to see if their children's possessions are covered while they are at university, it has been suggested.

Nationwide Building Society pointed out that people can avoid the cost of extra home insurance if they make sure students' belongings fall under the main cover.

The firm points out that many students take expensive possessions with them to university, including PCs, TVs, DVD players, hi-fi systems, games consoles and study books, which could be costly to insure separately.

Robin Bailey, Nationwide's insurance director, commented: "University is without doubt a very expensive experience for both students and parents. As a result, many parents may overlook the importance of their child having home insurance while temporarily away at university."

The company also adds that some insurance policies will cover paid for music downloads which have been stored on a mobile phone, MP3 player or other home entertainment device.

Last week, Confused.com recommended parents help their children sort out their financial affairs before attending university to avoid problems later on.
