Crime 'falling in England and Wales'

The number of crimes occurring in England and Wales appears to be falling, home insurance customers have heard.

Research published by the Home Office compared the data obtained in the British Crime Survey (BCS) and the offences recorded by the police for 2009/10.

The report showed that an estimated 9.6 million crimes occurred in England and Wales over the year, a fall of nine per cent on the 10.5 million in the previous year, as found by the BCS.

In addition, 4.3 million crimes were reported to the police during the 12-month period, decreasing by eight per cent on the previous year's 4.7 million.

However, the research also showed that the public believe crime is getting worse. The 2009/10 BCS found that 66 per cent of adults think that crime has been more commonplace over the past few years.

In addition, 31 per cent of respondents claimed that crime has gotten worse in their local area, while 15 per cent believe it is likely they will be burgled in the next 12 months.

Recent research from Yorkshire Bank Home Insurance found that the number of reported burglaries in Hartlepool has fallen by 65 per cent in the last seven years, almost double the national average.
