Cyclists advised to take out insurance

As national bike week begins, Halifax Home Insurance is urging cyclists not to give thieves an easy ride.

Recent figures from the British Crime Survey indicates that in the UK a bike is stolen every 65 seconds.

Therefore, Halifax is advising people to make sure they are insured in the home and also when out and about.

David Rochester, head of underwriting at the building society, said: "While cycling has many benefits for people's health and also the environment, it is important that people take adequate measures to protect their cycles."

According to Halifax's claims data, the area most prone to bike theft is London.

Other regions where cyclists are at greater risk of having their bikes stolen are Bristol, Reading and Chester.

A recent survey by Tescocompare revealed that 25 million Brits have accidentally damaged their house or its contents in the last five years, further highlighting the importance of home insurance.
