Digital music 'may not fall under home insurance'
Fri 29 Jan 2010 - Published in Home Insurance
The digital music collections of Brits could be a risk if they are not covered by home insurance, it has been pointed out.
Research by Sainsbury's Home Insurance found that around £1.3 billion worth of music has been downloaded in the UK, but just 24 per cent of policies offer cover for digital music.
The study also showed that the average music lover has a music download collection worth £85, although almost one million people say they own more than £250 worth of tracks.
However, just five per cent of downloaders are positive that their music is covered by their home insurance, while 23 per cent think they would be protected if their collection was lost.
Ben Tyte, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, commented: "Downloading music has taken off in recent years, but many home insurance policies are lagging behind in terms of covering people for their purchases."
Earlier this month, recorded music representative group BPI said that 16.1 million digital albums were sold in the UK during 2009, making up 12.5 per cent of the market.
