House owners should be mindful of thefts from outside their property and ensure the items are covered on their home insurance policy.
M&S Money warns that two thirds of people have not checked to see if their shrubs, trees, bushes and plants are covered by their home insurance.
Research from the company also shows that, on average, these items will be worth £721 and 17 per cent of people know someone who has been a victim of this kind of crime.
People in the north of England are more likely to be the subject of thefts from gardens, with almost a quarter knowing someone who has been a victim of it.
Judith Roberts, M&S Insurance Manager, says: "Householders often spend thousands of pounds securing their home to protect their family and property. However, despite the huge amount of time and money invested in many gardens, security levels are often very poor, making them an attractive target for thieves and vandals."
Homeowners were also warned not to let their DIY skills lead to home insurance claims when carrying out chores over the Easter weekend.
