Education needed 'for power-saving measures'

Homeowners need to have more information to show them the benefits of energy conservation, experts have suggested.

Dick Strawbridge, presenter of BBC Two's It's Not Easy Being Green, said that saving energy effectively is a learning process and is made easier if people are provided with education about what to do.

He called on energy companies to spearhead the green movement by making it easier for consumers to be able to monitor their own power use.

Mary Turner, chief executive of home energy management service AlertMe, added: "People have very busy lives. We need very simple information you can actually action on - because with energy use, you cannot actually see the waste."

She also claimed that around £900 million worth of energy could be saved in the UK if people took simple steps such as switching off appliances when they are not in use.

Recent research from Marketiers found that 48 per cent of consumers think their gas and electricity providers are not doing enough to help them cut their carbon emissions.
