Flood defences 'can help homeowners get insurance'

People in areas prone to flooding can get home insurance more easily if they fit defences, the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) has stated.
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at Biba, said that homeowners will help themselves in the long run by installing protection.
He commented: "If they do fit those defences then it means that they can get insurance and ... if there are no claims after a couple of years their excess will be very low."
In the Pitt Review published last month on lessons learned from the 2007 floods, Sir Michael Pitt said there needed to be "fundamental changes" in the way the country is dealing with the increased risk of flooding.
The report recommended the government establishes a committee to tackle the risk of flooding and suggested that the issue should be taken as seriously as pandemic flu and terrorism.
It also recommended that an action plan should be published.
