Flood warning expansion 'is good for homeowners'

Plans to improve the UK's flood warning system are "good news" for home insurance customers, an expert has said.
The Environment Agency (EA) revealed that from the end of the month it will provide an extra 500,000 homes with phone warnings if they are at risk of river or sea flooding.
Commenting on the move, Kelly Ostler-Coyle, media officer at the Association of British Insurers (ABI), explained that it will not reduce home insurance costs of property owners, but will provide them with piece of mind.
"This isn't saying more homes are at risk of flooding just that more homes will be added to the EA's flood warning system," she explained.
Ms Ostler-Coyle added that homeowners should regard it as "good news" that they could receive advance warning if they are at immediate risk of a flood.
According to figures from the ABI, the cost of damage caused by the floods in Cumbria last November has reached £200 million, with insurers handling 36,000 flood and storm damage claims to date.
