Garden insurance 'increasingly important'

UK gardens are becoming increasingly attractive to thieves, it has been revealed.

Research carried out by price comparison website Gocompare.com indicates 24.2 per cent of Britons have been the victim of garden crime.

Bicycles are the most commonly-stolen backyard items, with 52 per cent of victims having these taken, followed by valuable plants (29 per cent) and garden furniture (27 per cent).

Hayley Parsons, chief executive of the group, commented: "A plethora of home and garden design programmes have inspired us to see our gardens as an extension of our living space and furnish them with expensive patio furniture, barbeques, plants and children's play equipment."

She added that average garden now contains £1,040 worth of outdoor furniture and other items that provide rich pickings for thieves.

Last month, Confused.com stated that valuable items such as barbeques and expensive patio furniture are more likely to be stolen during summer months.
