Garden items 'not always covered by home insurance'

People need to ensure garden contents are covered on their home insurance policy, according to Defaqto.

The financial research company says many homeowners do not appreciate exactly how much their garden content is worth.

It claims items such as water features, garden furniture, decking, barbecues, swing seats and outside lighting can prove expensive to replace.

Mike Powell, consultant for general insurance at Defaqto, said: "Consumers do not always consider the true value of their garden and should take care to understand the extent of the cover on offer."

Research by Defaqto shows of the home contents policies currently available, 38 per cent provide £500 of cover or less for items kept in the garden, 47 per cent offer between £750 and £1,000 and 15 per cent are prepared to shell out over £1,000.

When it comes to plants, trees and shrubs, 68 per cent of policies gave no cover, 17 per cent provided £1,000 or less and 10 per cent offered more than £1,000.

Meanwhile, esure has advised students heading to university for the first time to ensure they have adequate home insurance in place.
