Garden thefts 'on the rise'

Homeowners need to be on their guard against garden thieves, according to Sainsbury's Home Insurance.

The bank says that the number of instances of items being stolen from gardens is increasing and it states the average amount of money paid out for a home insurance claim for such a theft last year was £291.30.

Sainsbury's found that about 24 per cent of garden theft claims are worth under £50, 23 per cent are worth between £50 and £100, while 26 per cent are worth between £101 and £400.

A further 11 per cent are valued between £401 and £1000, while three per cent are worth more than £1000.

Neil Laird from Sainsbury's said: "Homes seem to have rich-pickings that are left unsecured may be targeted again so, as well as tightening up security, it's worth picking a home insurance policy that allows you to benefit from and protect your no claims discount."

Sainsbury's Home Insurance estimates that Brits will spend £3.6 billion on our gardens this year.

The Halifax has also urged cyclists to ensure they have insurance after it was revealed that a bike is stolen every 65 seconds in the UK.
