Gardens 'should be protected by home insurance'

Property owners should ensure that their home insurance contains adequate protection for their gardens, an organisation asserts.

Darren Black, head of home insurance at Confused.com, says that people's plots can often contain expensive items such as barbeques and patio furniture.

He states: "The key message for the consumer is to shop around and always read the policy documents before you decide to buy … take time in checking the small print."

The organisation advises garden-owners that valuable items should be kept out of sight or under lock and key.

People could also mark possessions with their postcode using an ultraviolet pen, allowing stolen goods to be more recognisable.

Joining a Neighbourhood Watch or planting prickly hedges are other means of disincentivising potential thieves.

In other news, research by Sainsbury's Bank has found that four million cats and dogs have gone missing in the last five years, which could highlight the need for pet insurance.
