Increased competition among insurers means that cheaper car and home insurance can still provide a good level of cover, according to moneysupermarket.com.

Peter Gerrard from the company said: "What might be a really cheap policy may still offer some really good benefits. It is a case of looking around, looking at what is excluded and at what you need."

The AA British Insurance Premium Index for the first quarter of 2008 shows that widely predicted car and home insurance rises have not been realised.

After a year of increases that added nearly six per cent to the average annual quote for comprehensive car insurance, the index revealed a slight fall.

Meanwhile, the average cost of buildings and contents insurance remained steady at about £209 during the first quarter of 2008.

Following last year's floods there was speculation that home insurance premiums would rocket.
