Govt unveils extra flood protection

The government has unveiled the second phase of a scheme to protect home insurance customers from flooding.

Environment minister Huw Irranca-Davies announced that £2.6 million of the £5.5 million Property Level Flood Protection Grant Scheme will be allocated to 34 projects in high-risk areas.

The funding, which is part of the response to Sir Michael Pitt’s review of the 2007 floods, will allow 532 households to receive measures such as storm porches, door guards and air bricks covers.

Mr Irranca-Davies commented: "Property level measures like flood boards aren't appropriate for every situation, but as was shown in Appleby at the end of last year, they can be a very effective way for householders to protect their homes."

The first round of funding saw 25 local authorities have access to £3 million to protect 593 properties in England.

Last month, the Highways Agency started replacing drainage works on the A45 between Fosse-Way Island and Thurlaston to cut the risk of flooding on the road.
