Holiday home owners 'should check what their insurance...

People looking at taking out holiday home insurance might benefit from a policy with public liability and emergency travel cover, according to the AA.

Public relations manager Ian Crowder said if, for example, you get a call from the people who are staying in your house and they say there has been a fire in the kitchen you would need to get there immediately.

He added there might also be benefits from taking out insurance in the UK.

Mr Crowder stated: "It obviously will be cheaper if you insure abroad, but you're not comparing like for like because overseas insurers don't provide the same levels of cover."

Research by Zurich Private Clients revealed one in ten people do not have insurance for their holiday homes and a further eleven per cent were unsure whether their insurance was sufficient.

It also found the average holiday home contains valuables worth £15,200.

Statistics from 2005-06 showed 278,000 households in the UK have second homes in Britain and 211,000 have second homes abroad.
