Home insurance claims soar on flash floods

Heavy rain and thunderstorms have hit much of the UK in recent weeks, causing flash flooding and pushing up the number of home insurance claims being made.

As the warm weather abated across much of Britain, many people saw the weather turn gloomy and some heavy rain has resulted in flash flooding in parts of the country.

This has led to a surge in home insurance claims, the AA has reported, with many homeowners struggling to cope in the aftermath.

Although the Met Office has predicted a long hot summer for Britain, the recent floods have brought back memories of the torrential rain and widespread flooding that hit many parts of England two years ago.

"While widespread flooding of the sort experienced in 2007 is relatively rare even in identified flood-prone areas, flash floods can happen almost anywhere so it is vital that householders are not tempted to save money by not renewing their home insurance," said Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance.

People should compare insurance quotes to find the best deal for them, especially during the current recession, when money is even tighter than usual for many families.

Meanwhile, homeowners have also been reminded of the benefits of a good home insurance policy if they intend to make the most of the expected good weather this summer.

Home insurance firm esure has highlighted the potential to claim on home insurance for items lost, damaged or stolen while at one of this summer's many music festivals.
