Parents whose teenagers want to throw a house party to celebrate their exam results should be careful, Sainsbury's Home Insurance warns.

Research by the group revealed that parties held by children in their parents' houses are to blame for £16.8 million of damage every year.

The survey also found that 54,000 parties a year are held by children without their parents' permission and these alone are responsible for approximately £1.4 million of damage.

Sainsbury's Home Insurance is warning homeowners that they may not be fully covered for their children's parties, especially when social networking sites are used to extend invitations.

Neil Laird from the group said it is not unusual to have parties where hundreds of people turn up.

He stated: "When such events get out of hand some insurers may suggest that the homeowner failed to take due care of the property and could refuse to pay up."

Elsewhere, the Co-operative has claimed home insurance has risen relatively little over the past 100 years and remains value for money.
