Home insurance 'should cover bicycle theft'

UK householders should check their insurance policies cover possible bicycle theft, according to Halifax Home Insurance.

The financial services provider pointed out that bike sales have increased by 50 per cent this year but bicycles are also among the top things thieves look to steal from sheds, along with tools, furniture, lawnmowers and plant pots.

Senior claims manager at the group Martyn Foulds commented that despite a wetter than average summer last year, the company saw a seven per cent increase in claims for bike theft during the season.

"Many bikes that are stolen are locked up, but often some types of locks such as cables can be cut and are therefore not enough of a deterrent. We anticipate that this year bike thefts may be on the up as warmer weather prevails," he added.

Earlier this week, insurer esure advised those heading off on caravanning holidays this summer to ensure they take out travel cover and check their home insurance policies.
