As the cost of kitting kids out for school rises, some 20 per cent of parents have said they will use credit cards to pay for back to school clobber.

Research by Sheilas' Wheels has found the cost of equipping the average child with everything they need for school is £1,623.

And it would seem the popularity of electronic gadgets is one key factor in higher back to school bills.

The survey of almost 900 parents revealed 43 per cent of children carry a mobile phone with them to school, with 21 per cent of those aged ten-years or younger.

Another 19 per cent take iPods or MP3 players into class, while 15 per cent carry hand-held games consoles.

Jacky Brown from Sheilas' Wheels advised parents to make sure expensive items were covered on home insurance policies.

She said: "If your son or daughter can't be persuaded to keep their mobile phone or iPod at home then it's crucial to have adequate cover for personal possessions away from the home."

Elsewhere, a study by Abbey Savings has revealed 26 per cent of Brits would opt to spend any extra cash they had on getting away, rather than saving it.
