Home insurance 'vital for romantic gifts'

Many people are neglecting to ensure Valentine's Day gifts are covered under home insurance, it has been suggested.

Research from Halifax Home Insurance found that one-fifth of people think they will give or receive expensive jewellery this February 14th, although 47 per cent have not thought if the presents will be covered on their policy.

Furthermore, the poll discovered that ten per cent of jewellery purchased will be engagement rings.

The survey also found that 16 per of people assume that the Valentine's Day presents will automatically be covered by their insurance, although just 27 per cent know that this is the case for sure.

David Rochester, head of underwriting for Halifax Home Insurance, said: "At this time of year love is most definitely in the air and many people will be planning to pop the question with an expensive diamond, or buy a valuable gift to show how much they care."

Insurer Sheilas' Wheels recently claimed that the UK's jewellery boxes are thought to be worth £40.5 billion and reminded people of the importance of making sure they are fully covered by home insurance.
