Home insurance 'vital for students'

As students start thinking about heading off to university, it is important they have adequate home insurance in place to protect their belongings, according to esure.

Research by the group has found the average student will have about £1,500 worth of goods in tow when they leave to start their studies.

Some 74 per cent will be taking a computer, 51 per cent will have a camera and 50 per cent will have an iPod or MP3 player.

However, 24 per cent of parents have not thought about buying insurance to cover their children's possessions and 12 per cent assume the items will be covered under their policy.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure home insurance, said: "It is very important that parents make sure they have sufficient contents cover in place to protect their child's belongings."

Meanwhile, after David Cameron had his bike stolen last week, Asda Financial Services advised cyclists must ensure bikes are listed amongst their personal possessions on their home insurance policy.
