Home protection 'vital in the summer'

Home insurance customers should ensure they are taking the basic precautions to protect their property, experts have pointed out.

Specialist household insurer Hiscox noted that the summer is the peak season for burglaries and reminded homeowners of the simple steps which can reduce their risk of being targeted.

The group said that people should use trees, walls or railings as physical barriers to prevent thieves from getting close to their property, while all external doors on a building should be fitted with a deadlock.

In addition, outbuildings which contain gardening or sports equipment should have padlocks and deadlocks installed on them and windows should be painted over to prevent thieves from seeing inside.

Andrew Cheney, senior risk and valuation advisor at Hiscox UK, commented: "Think of your property with rings of security - from the outer perimeter of your garden and driveway to the inside of your home. There are ways of securing your boundaries and driveway, followed by the main property and outbuildings."

Earlier this month, moneysupermarket.com claimed that up to £937 million a year is wasted in the UK by households automatically renewing their home insurance without looking for a better deal.
