Homeowners 'forget shed security'

Many homeowners in the UK are undermining their home insurance plans by neglecting to lock their sheds, it has been claimed.

Research carried out by financial services provider M&S Money found 24 per cent of residents have failed to take steps to secure their shed, despite the average outhouse containing £888 worth of property.

The group went on to say 30 per cent of shed owners know someone who has had property stolen.

Judith Roberts: M&S insurance manager, said: "Our survey reveals that many people fail to take even simple steps to secure their shed. It's not surprising, therefore, that insurers receive many claims for theft from sheds."

She went on to emphasise that householders should check whether their home insurance policy provides cover for theft from outhouses and whether there is a limit on that cover.

Last week, insurer esure stated that people who attempt DIY over the Easter weekend should take care not to damage their property, which could lead to them having to make an insurance claim.
