Homeowners 'should protect themselves from rats'

Rats are seeking shelter from the cold weather and causing problems for home insurance customers, it has been claimed.
Darren Black, head of Confused.com, pointed out that rodents are not fans of cold conditions and are increasingly coming into homes in a bid to find warmth.
"Homeowners need to take steps which will prevent rats gaining access to our homes as these pest guests are particularly unsavoury," he commented.
The price comparison website recommended that people seal any holes or gaps in their walls and replace any broken drain covers, as they provide ways for rats to enter a property.
In addition, external doors and windows should be kept closed as much as possible, while any food waste should be contained securely to stop rats from investigating it.
Recently, housing charity Shelter claimed that up to 11.3 million homes are restricting their use of heating in the cold weather to save money for rent or mortgages.
