Homeowners urged to protect their property

As storms continue to batter Britain homeowners are being urged to make sure their property is covered.

Home insurance company Direct Line has said it has seen a 300 per cent rise in property claim calls. Strong winds and torrential rain has continued to engulf Britain with the worst of the weather being seen in Scotland.

There seems to be no sign of the weather relenting with the Met Office issuing a 'yellow warning' for heavy rain across the country with some localised flooding mainly north of the border as well as strong winds hitting southern parts.

Stuart Curson, head of company's home insurance, said: "Nearly half of all weather related claims are due to roof damage. However, personal safety is paramount and if it is not safe to do so, do not attempt even temporary repairs. Damage to gates, garage and shed doors are also common claims. Keep these closed and locked when not in use."
