Homeowners 'warned over Wimbledon smashes'

Householders are being reminded that claims for broken windows and accidental glass breakage rose by a third last year during Wimbledon.

Research carried out by financial services provider Halifax indicates homeowners in Ipswich and Stirling are most prone to smashes and the group stressed that accidental damage cover could help sports fans protect their homes.

The company put the rise in breakages down to tennis enthusiasts becoming inspired by the tournament and rushing out to display their skills.

David Rochester, head of underwriting for Halifax Home Insurance, commented: "We'd advise any budding Murrays and Sharapovas to take care when playing ball sports close to home and check they are insured for accidental damage should a mishap occur."

Last week, financial services provider esure commented that people heading to music festivals this summer should compare home insurance products in a bid to find the best deals to cover them while they are away.
