Homeowners 'will improve properties'

Homeowners will become "much more inventive" when attempting to personalise their property, it has been claimed.

Julia Goodwin, editor of House Beautiful magazine, told home insurance customers that people are increasingly looking to put their own stamp on their properties as they realise they are unlikely to be moving any time soon.

She suggested that there is a trend for retro 50s and 60s styles at the moment, with many retailers bringing out furniture to suit these designs.

"In terms of decorating schemes, we have all painted our walls neutral or cream for years [but] that look is now being replaced by grey," the expert added.

Ms Goodwin also said "zingy" colours such as bright lime, citrus yellow and olive often work well with grey and cushions, throws or rugs using these can be placed around a room to create contrast.

Recently, research from Aspect Maintenance found that per cent of people living in London plan to improve their house in the next 12 months.
