Homes 'are easy to break into'

A new survey has revealed that around six million homeowners across the country can break into their own homes.

The research, conducted by Zurich Insurance, has revealed that one-third of homeowners believe they could break into their own houses, with one in ten having actually done so.

And indeed among those that have done so, breaking in did not take a long period of time. A total of 67 per cent broke in within 15 minutes, while 28 per cent managed to do so in less than five minutes.

Managing director for direct and partnerships at Zurich Insurance Mike Quinton said: "If homeowners an break in to their own properties that's a major warning sign for them to take stock of their security measures."

He added that it was not necessary to turn a home into a fortress, but taking some basic precautions can help with home security.

The home insurance company has provided a new site to help offer tips on ways to make the home a safer place and reduce the chance of burglary.
