Insurance policies 'should suit people's needs'

People looking to cover their home against theft and damage should ensure they choose a policy which suits their needs, one expert has stated.

Maggie Craig, acting director general of the Association of British Insurers (ABI), said that consumers need to understand what they require out of their cover before making any commitments, which can be achieved by analysing the fine points of policies.

"Whether it's previous medical problems or a recent speeding fine, full and early disclosure avoids any possible problems later. Holding back something that is relevant will be a false economy," she explained.

Ms Craig added that regularly updating contents cover to reflect the true value fop possessions is also a wise idea.

It comes after a report by M&S Home Insurance showed that, of the 69 per cent of Brits who will have spent at least one night away from home in August, 51 per cent will be leaving the house empty, with no friend or neighbour to keep an eye on the property in their absence.
