Linda Barker: Home design becoming more personal
By Marianne Straker, Wed 24 Feb 2010 - Published in Home Insurance
Home insurance customers are attempting to be more individual when doing up their properties, an expert has suggested.
Linda Barker, interior designer and spokesperson for the Ideal Home show, claimed that people are starting to view their properties as somewhere to live for a length of time, rather than a project to renovate and sell for a quick profit.
"Consequently, people are using a lot more colour and pattern and putting a bit more thought into how they want it to [look]," she explained.
Ms Barker added that home insurance customers are avoiding the minimalist approach to interior design, which is based around white and cream, and are instead looking for styles which are more eclectic and show their personality.
The expert also said that this trend is manifesting itself by more people including craft items which they have made themselves in their home.
House Beautiful Magazine recently claimed that 1950s interiors are returning to the UK, with homeowners opting for designs which include free-standing appliances, retro-patterned fabrics and tailored upholstery.
