Men 'lacking DIY knowledge when young'

Men are getting into DIY later in life because of changing living situations, according to an expert.

A recent survey by Screwfix found that 51 per cent of men in their 20s do not know how to wire a plug, compared to just 15 per cent of those over 50.

In addition, half of 20-year-old men cannot bleed a radiator and 13 per cent find it difficult to change a light bulb.

Commenting on the findings, Build It magazine editor Duncan Hayes said that young men's lack of DIY skills is due to them buying a home later in life.

"A lot of people are starting out on the housing ladder later. I think for a lot of people that's the trigger when they start to really get into DIY," he explained.

Mr Hayes claimed that people who are renting a home do not have the incentive to carry out repairs, as it is easier for them to ask their landlord to fix faults.
