New survey 'highlights need for accidental damage cover'

More than a quarter of Brits have spent over £200 to replace something that was damaged accidentally within their homes, according to research by Direct Line.

The survey found that 30 per cent of people have spilt red wine on the carpet and more than a third have damaged ornaments such as vases and photo-frames.

More than a quarter of those questioned also admitted spilling paint on the carpet while 40 per cent said they had damaged furniture as the result of an accident.

Andrew Lowe from Direct Line said the findings highlight the importance of accidental damage insurance.

He commented: "The cost and inconvenience of damaging something with sentimental and material value is extremely frustrating."

Meanwhile, the rising costs of transport and raw materials as well as a shortage of tradesmen are pushing up the costs of home improvements, according to new figures from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
