People 'need to inform insurer about DIY jobs'

Homeowners planning large-scale DIY projects should inform their home insurer so they can check their policy covers the work being done, according to Endsleigh.

Rhiannon Harris from Endsleigh said: "We must be advised of any alteration of the risk, so this will include any DIY projects, in order that we may consider the continuation of cover in general."

Ms Harris added that Endsleigh would not pay for damage arising from, amongst other things, "faulty design or workmanship or the use of faulty materials".

Figures from home insurance company Zurich revealed that almost half of homeowners do not inform their home insurer of major DIY updates they are planning to make to their property,

Three quarters of those questioned also admitted they were unsure whether their home insurance policy would cover any DIY mistakes they made.

A further 87 per cent said they had carried out DIY without checking whether they were insured for the work or any resultant damage.
