Personal possessions cover 'is vital for expensive gadgets'

Brits need to make sure their home insurance includes personal possessions cover for the items they carry about on a daily basis, Zurich Insurance has warned.

Research by the group has found the average person in the UK carries around personal items worth £972, up from £851 in 2006.

Zurich has voiced concerns that Brits are making themselves vulnerable to thieves by the conspicuous display of expensive items such as mobile phones, iPods and designer handbags.

It claims a third of people admitted they used their mobiles and iPods in public without a second thought.

Managing director at Zurich Mike Quinton said: "We all need to be vigilant and make sure we're discreet with these expensive items to avoid being targeted by muggers."

In order to keep personal items safe, Zurich recommends carrying one payment card - rather than credit, debit and store cards – and making sure any expensive items are protected by personal possessions cover.

Last week, Ofcom's annual UK communications market report found that Brits are spending longer than ever before chatting on their mobile phones.
