Separate holiday home insurance 'may be unnecessary'

People who only visit their holiday home abroad occasionally do not necessarily need separate home insurance for their second property, the AA advises.

Public relations manager Ian Crowder said homeowners could opt to extend their first home insurance cover instead.

He stated: "It's a good idea to have an extension on your home contents policy which gives cover for your personal property anywhere in the world."

Mr Crowder said this would allow holidaymakers to claim on their first home insurance policy if their possessions were lost or damaged abroad.

He added it also meant baggage cover would not need to be taken out as part of a travel insurance policy.

Research by Zuruch Private Clients has revealed ten per cent of people do not have insurance for their holiday homes and a further eleven per cent are unsure whether the cover they have is sufficient.

The average holiday home contains £15,200 worth of valuables and two-thirds of people visit once every three months at most.
